Excerpt “Pam, can you come in here please?” Ramona furiously scribbled notes on a pad, jotting down issues she needed researched. She had a ton of work to catch up on after spending time at Vince’s school. “What’s up, Mona?” Pam entered the room and took a seat across from her. “Can you type up these notes and send them to Paul? Let him know I’ll need a memo as soon as possible, but no later than Monday, okay?’ “Sure.” Pam stood and was about to leave the room, but then returned to her seat. “Okay, spill it.” “Spill what?” Ramona asked innocently. “Don’t play with me, Mona. What’s going on with the kids and Sydney?” Ramona placed her pen on the desk, leaned back in her leather chair and closed her eyes. “She came by the house last night, tore up, and wanting to take the kids. I refused to let her have them and put her to bed in one of the guestrooms. She was gone by the time I got up.” “She didn’t take the kids, did she?” “No, thank goodness. I’ve been trying to call her all day, but she’s not picking up or returning my messages. I’m worried about her.” “I’m sure you are, Mona. Are the kids alright?” “Yeah. They have clothes at my house, so they had something clean to wear to school.” “That reminds me, how’d the bake sale go today?” The last thing she wanted to do was talk about the bake sale. Immediately, Garrett’s face popped into her mind. He was one infuriating, but handsome man. He had to be at least six-three, mocha colored skin, and a close cut hairstyle. But she had to admit what really made him attractive was his voice she loved a man with some bass in his voice, and he had plenty of that. “Hellooo,” crooned Pam. “Where’d you go, boss?” Blinking quickly to clear her head, Ramona picked up another file and pretended to look through it. “I’m sorry. I guess I’m a little tired.” Can you get that request to Paul now?” Pam eyed her suspiciously and started walking to the door. “I’ve known you too long, girlfriend. There’s something else bothering you, so you can tell me now or later it’s your choice.” Needing to get back to work, Ramona put the file down and faced Pam. “I met a man today—” “Great!” “Don’t get too excited. His son, Devin, is best friends with Vince and for reasons I still don’t comprehend, we’re all going out to dinner tonight.” “Dinner?” “Yeah, dinner. The boys cooked up the idea of meeting at Pizza Palace this evening.” Ramona still could not get Garrett’s smirk out of her mind and his belief that she would disappoint the boys. Picking the file up again, she said, “I really need that information from Paul.” Reluctantly rising to her feet, Pam headed for the door once again. “Call me if you need anything else.” As soon as Pam walked out the door, Ramona set the file aside. What was wrong with her, letting that man get her like that? Note to self ignore Garrett Wolfe tonight. She had a lot on her plate, and there was no room on it for that frustrating man.
